Santha Devi: end of a melencholic note

The life of Santha Devi, who died here on Saturday, had a touch of melancholy in it - like some of the songs sung by her late husband Kozhikode Abdul Khader.
Tragedy never spared Santha Devi in her eventful life. She had the mortification of seeing her first husband leaving her months after the marriage. And she saw the untimely death of her son.
Left alone by the relatives, Santha Devi spent her last days at an Old Age Home. She had to depend on the charity of her well-wishers in her last days. Bouts of diseases that hit her at regular intervals made things difficult for the gifted artiste.
It was hard to believe for the new generation in Kozhikode that the frail figure that move around in their midst was a film star. Acting was not a timepass for her, but the only source of income. Towards the fag end of her career, she accepted even insignificant roles as she had no choice.
Born to Kulangarathu Kannakurup and Thottthil Karthyayani, Santha Devi had her education at Sabha School in Kozhikode. It was her contact with Vasu Pradeep that led her to the world of acting. Smarakam was the entry into the theatre. She went ahead with acting as a career through the plays of P J Antony, K T Muhammad and Thikkodian. She was a regular actress in the plays of K T Muhmmad. Kuthiravattom Pappu, Nellikode Bhaskaran and Kunhandi were her colleagues.
Kozhikode Abdul Khader, whom she married later, was the main source of inspiration for Santha Devi. It was he who introduced her to Vasu Pradeep and motivated her to enter into the field of acting.
She was well-accepted in her mother roles in the film world. She has played the role of Prem Nazir's mother in Iruttinte Atmavu and Mohanlal's in Kamala Dalam. She kept alive her passion for acting by finding a place in television serials when the roles in the movies diminished. Annarakkannum Thannalyathu was her last film. She was eager to rush to shooting locations even when physical disabilities stared on her face.
Body of Santha Devi will be kept at the Town Hall here at 11.30 am on Sunday to enable the public to pay last respects. Funeral will be held at Mavoor Road crematorium at 2 pm with full state honours.
