Vanaparvam, Herbal Par at Kakkavayal Kozhikode

A herbal park ‘Vanaparvam,' coming up at Kakkavayal in the Thamarassery Forest Range in the district is all set to infortain the visitors. The herbal park is being set up for the conservation of rare and endangered species of plants are protected in park that spreads over an area of 111.4 hectares.

According to official data, there are around 2,300 saplings of various plant species are planted in the area as part of the conservation project. Rare, Endangered and Threatened (RET) species of medicinal plants are protected in the garden with the help of Vana Samrakshana Samithis and families residing in the region. Nearly 1500 saplings belonging to 150 priced medicinal plants are also conserved with the help of residents.

A butterfly park will also be set up at Kakkavayal to protect rare butterfly species. Site for the park has been identified and plants those attract butterflies are planted in the park.

Besides, bamboo garden with more than 23 species of bamboo plants are also set. According to the officials, an orchidarium with 75 wild species of orchids will also be also be arranged by January 15, when the park will be opened to common public. Nearly 20 wild orchids are already in the garden.

A trecking terrain, suspension bridges and a check-dam across a nearby river are to come up in the project area. The government has sanctioned `40 lakh to complete the first phase of project. The government will spend a total of `96 lakh for the completion of the project in two years, according to officials.
A bio-diversity register will also be prepared by the Forest department in association with the Zoological survey of India to help researchers and students who visit the park. An interpretation centre will also be constructed for the purpose.
