Institute of Palliative Medicine a Collaborating Centre (CC) of World Health Organisation

Institute of Palliative Medicine (IPM) of Medical College Kozhikode has been selected a Collaborating Centre (CC) of World Health Organisation. IPM is the fifth WHO Collaborating Centre in palliative care in the world and the first in the developing world.

IPM has been selected WHOCC considering their long term work in palliative care sector with the collaboration of social organisations, service in helping the destitute and elderly. The work of IPM in the past six years were evaluated by WHO before attaching IPM as a Collaborating Centre.

Members of WHO had visited IPM to evaluate the processes directly. World Health Organisation sanctioned the title WHOCC to IPM after they submitted a proposal to the Central government seeking their sanction, informed IPM Director Dr. Suresh Kumar and Secretary Dr. M Geetha in a news release issued here on Thursday.

With the new title, responsibilities of IPM also increases. IPM is entrusted to give technical advices to WHO.IPM is also responsible for giving guidance and technical support to other countries who want to introduce similar palliative care methods in their country. Moreover, they should extend help in starting similar projects, at least in two more countries, in the next four years.

Apart from Kerala, three more states in India should also be initiated to similar palliative care methods with the support the community.

IPM will also be responsible for formulating training programmes for doctors and nursing staff to expertise them in palliative care and long term patient care. IPM is also entrusted to help the WHO in developing primary health care programmes to focus on long term effects of diseases.

Preparation of modules for those working in primary health care and to prepare training programmes to help them improve their efficiency, also is the responsibility of IPM.

Collaborating Centres are entrusted to guide the health management system existing in the member countries of WHO. While one WHOCC in palliative care each are in Spain and US, two are in UK.
